What is the difference between the BIG Startup School and other startup programs?
This is a hands-on 12-week course where you use a learning-by-doing approach to design and build a prototype for a business idea. You will learn to evaluate customer needs, create wireframes, specify functional requirements for a mobile or web application, and actually ship a prototype by the end of the course.
In addition, students will attend weekly skill-building sessions led by outside experts with guests from Silicon Valley and Southeast Asia.
What if I can't attend all the classes?
That would be unfortunate as each class is vital! As a general rule, you should be able to attend at least 90% of the classes.
For the classes that you will miss, please ensure that your other two team members are around.
I am working/have an internship during summer. Would I still be able to attend the Startup School?
Definitely! The Startup School was designed such that participants can attend it even if they have full-time commitments during summer. On-site classes are on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-8pm, while remote classes (video/audio calls) are on Fridays from 9-10am. Guest speakers from the US will call in on Fridays for AMA/Q&A sessions.
Will there be a certificate of attendance upon completion of the program?
Yes. More than a certificate of attendance, you will have a prototype at the end of the programme for your efforts!
Who is expected to attend the Startup School?
The Startup School is open to aspiring founders from all walks of life. We are expecting participants from a variety of backgrounds.
Can SkillsFuture Credit be used to pay for the program?
Not at this point. This programme is free for all students and SMU affiliated applicants.
Only working professionals will be charged a minimal fee for this programme.
I do not have an idea nor a team. Can I still join?
Sure! Apply as a joiner and we will match you with a team. The skills taught during the programme will be applicable not only to aspiring entrepreneurs, but also aspiring product managers or anyone who is interested in the startup ecosystem.
